Why YenWise?

YenWise is built by expats who live and breathe Japanese finance. Every calculator is verified against official National Tax Agency (NTA), Financial Services Agency (FSA), and Japan Pension Service sources. We update our formulas whenever tax laws change, not once a year. The result: accurate numbers you can trust for real financial decisions.

📋

NTA-Verified Accuracy

All tax calculations are cross-referenced against official NTA publications, including the 2026 Reiwa 7 tax reform.

🔄

Truly Bilingual

Every tool, article, and explanation is available in English and Japanese, with correct financial terminology in both languages.

🔒

Zero Data Collection

All calculations run in your browser. We never collect, store, or transmit your salary, income, or personal financial data.

Who Is YenWise For?

Whether you just arrived in Japan or have been here for decades, YenWise helps you understand the numbers behind your daily life. Our tools are designed for foreign residents at every stage, from figuring out your first payslip to planning your retirement.

How Accurate Are the Calculations?

Every formula on YenWise is traced to a primary source — National Tax Agency (NTA) tax bulletins, Financial Services Agency (FSA) publications, and Japan Pension Service documentation. When Japanese tax law changes, we rebuild the affected calculator rather than patching it. We then cross-check sample outputs against real withholding slips (gensen choshuhyo), pension notices (nenkin teikibin), and published government statistics. The 2026 Reiwa 7 tax reform — which split national and local basic deductions into a two-track system — is fully implemented, including the statutory truncation rules (kirisute) required at every calculation step. Where we use an approximation (such as the flat 15% social insurance estimate), we say so explicitly in the results and limitations.

What You Can Do on YenWise

YenWise is more than a single calculator — it is a complete bilingual toolkit for the financial decisions expats face in Japan. Use the tools together to build a full picture of your financial life, then go deeper with our written guides and blog.

Free, Forever — and Built With Intention

YenWise is and always will be free to use. There are no accounts, no paywalls, no premium tiers, and no limits on how many times you run a calculation. The tools run entirely in your browser, which means your salary, investments, and pension details never leave your device. We fund the site through unobtrusive advertising rather than by harvesting and selling personal data — a deliberate choice that keeps the calculator trustworthy. If a tool ever saves you real money, the best way to thank us is simply to share YenWise with another expat who might need it.
